“Resort” is an exhibition exploring unavoidable shifts, accompanied by a series of meetings. The notion of a resort as a mode of modernized living was popularized in Lithuania in the first half of the 20th Century – back then, Lentvaris already possessed all the qualities required to be treated as such.
Once, the basis for the city’s prosperity was the planned railway junction. The point of transit attracted the investors of the time – the Tiszkiewicz family, which established the whole infrastructure of the city, comprised of a school, a church, a restaurant, a hotel and others.
The remnants of manor culture emphasize the significant changes on the current face of the city, and its industrial spirit is fortified by the now legendary local factories, raised during the Soviet period.
The collective memory of the local population and historical sources allow us to discover the isolated, secret portals in the resort – its unexplained signage. Posing a riddle, they unavoidably connect constantly shifting mythologies, personal narratives and historical facts. The comfortable environment allows its visitors to not only enjoy their retreat and rest, but to also understand labor and leisure relations, as well as the methods and traditions that shape them. Artists and researchers gathering at the “Resort” will display the forgotten and, possibly, even unheard stories of local legends. This exhibition will keep growing right up until its closing, accompanied by meetings, walks, and conversations.
